This Maori Heru Hair Comb is on the large side, measuring approximately 15cm (6') long, 3.3cm (1 1/4') wide, and having 4 teeth.
The top is beautifully decorated in the shape of a Manaia, the Maori provider and protector over land, sea and air. Its traditionally bird-like head has a native paua shell eye. Paua shell is New Zealand's native abalone, with irridescent shades of blue, green, pink and purple.
The heru is made from beef bone.
Traditionally worn to tie up a hair knot, it is perfect for kapa haka performances.
